ATS keywords are not magic terms that guarantee an interview. They are words and phrases that help a hiring team match your application to what the role needs.
Where keywords come from
- Job titles and seniority labels.
- Required tools, platforms, and methods.
- Repeated responsibilities and success measures.
- Qualifications, certifications, and domain terms.
How to identify the right keywords
- Highlight repeated hard skills and tools.
- Mark exact phrases that describe the work.
- Separate required items from nice-to-have items.
- Compare those terms to your summary, skills, and experience bullets.
Where to place keywords
The strongest places are the sections where the words naturally belong: summary, skills, and experience. Experience bullets are usually the most credible because they show how you used the skill.
Avoid keyword stuffing
Stuffing happens when a CV repeats terms without evidence. A better approach is to connect the keyword to context and contribution. Instead of repeating "SQL" several times, show how SQL helped you analyse performance, reduce reporting time, or improve a decision.
Keywords are only one signal
Even when keyword match improves, recruiters still care about credibility, structure, and outcomes. Use keywords to improve alignment, not to replace substance.
